Why dental implants can be a better solution than dentures

Written by Will Murphy, 24th June, 2019

A popular solution for multiple tooth loss is dentures. They can have a positive impact on a person’s appearance as well boosting their confidence, but they are not without problems. In this article we look at some of the issues caused by dentures and how dental implants could be a better solution.

Some of the issues caused by dentures:

Poor Diet

As dentures are not permanently fixed, they can cause pain and discomfort when eating. Denture wearers tend to cope with this by consuming foods that are easier to chew, avoiding tougher foods such as raw vegetables, chewy meat and nuts. Because of the limitations this places on your diet it can lead to nutritional problems and weight loss.

Older Appearance

When teeth have been lost, the jawbone underneath loses stimulation from the tooth’s root and it starts to recede, making you appear older than you actually are. Whilst dentures help with the aesthetic appearance of tooth loss, they do not maintain the stimulation of the jawbone.

Gum Irritation

Dentures can cause irritation with a person’s gum when poorly fitted, leading to inflammation. When the gums are swollen, they are more susceptible to infections and can cause you further issues down the line.

Why dental implants are a better option

Dental implants are the only permanent solution to tooth loss and counteract all of the issues outlined above. Made from a titanium screw that is fixed into the jawbone, they look and function just like real teeth, allowing you to eat a normal diet. They also prevent gum irritation and stop the jawbone from deteriorating due to stimulation from the titanium screw. They are the closest alternative you can get to real teeth.

If you have lost a lot or all of your teeth, you do not need single dental implants for every missing tooth. A full arch fixed bridge can be permanently fixed to your jaw using 4 or more dental implants. A permanent solution, the arch does not need to be removed at night and doesn’t cover the roof of your mouth. A dental implant fixed bridge looks and feels like real teeth, providing you with strong porcelain teeth compared to the plastic teeth that make up dentures.
